Compare blackout curtains before buying

Blackout curtains are often judged by the fabric alone, but light usually reveals the gaps around an installation. A dense panel may still leave a bright stripe above the rod or beside the window. Before buying, inspect the window as a whole: glass, frame, hardware, neighboring furniture, and the direction from which unwanted light enters.
Look at the window when the problem happens
A streetlight at midnight and sunrise on an east-facing window create different patterns. Observe the room at the relevant time if possible. Note whether light comes through the fabric, around its edges, or from another source entirely. Curtains will not solve the glow from a hallway or a bright device across the room.
Use those observations to decide how much darkening you need. A room does not have to resemble a theater for the curtains to be useful. You may want to soften early light while preserving an easy way to open the window and enjoy daylight during the rest of the day.
Measure beyond the glass
Record the window width and height, then consider where the rod or track can be installed. Coverage usually needs to extend beyond the opening to limit edge gaps, but the available wall space may be constrained by a corner, wardrobe, or radiator. Measure those obstacles before choosing panel dimensions.
Look at how the panels will gather when open. Heavy curtains need room to stack, and a narrow rod can leave them covering part of the window all day. The installation should serve both the closed position at night and the open position when you want light.
Compare the hanging system
Eyelets, hooks, rings, and tracks create different relationships between fabric and wall. Some arrangements leave more space at the top; others allow the panel to sit closer to the opening. Match the system to the light pattern you observed rather than choosing solely by appearance.
Check the weight the hardware can support and the mounting method suitable for the wall. In a rental, understand the permitted alterations before drilling. Temporary fixtures have limits, especially with heavy lined fabric. A falling rod is not a reasonable trade for a darker room.
Read what the fabric claim means
Light filtering, room darkening, and blackout descriptions are not always used in the same way across sellers. Look for specific information about the construction and expected result. If samples are available, inspect one against a light source, while remembering that a sample cannot reproduce the installed edges.
Consider the color and texture facing the room, but also the backing and care instructions. A curtain that cannot be cleaned conveniently may be awkward in a dusty room or a household with pets. Lined panels can be bulky, so check whether home laundering is practical.
Keep other room functions available
Curtains should not block a heater, obstruct ventilation, or interfere with an exit. Check the required clearance for nearby equipment and choose a length that suits the space. Fabric pooling on the floor may look appealing but can collect dirt and complicate movement beside the bed.
Keep cords and other hanging components safely managed, especially where children might reach them. Make sure opening and closing the curtains does not require climbing over furniture. A practical installation is one you will use every day without rearranging the room.
Inspect the finished result
After hanging the panels, check the room under the original problem conditions. Look for the remaining bright edges before deciding the fabric has failed. Small positioning changes may matter more than replacing the entire set.
Keep enough flexibility to reopen the room easily in the morning. The most useful curtains provide the degree of darkness you wanted, move smoothly, and fit the window's everyday needs. That combination matters more than a dramatic product photograph taken in a different room.
